Japan's Aeon to open 4th megastore, eyes expansion in Vietnam

Under the plan announced at a press conference on Tuesday, 20 megastores of the chain Aeon Mall in be opened in Vietnam, local media reported. Aeon also plans to have 100 supermarkets around the country through mergers and acquisitions. Also the company plans to collaborate with local manufacturers to produce consumer goods under its brand Top Value for both the Vietnamese and oversea markets.

US$170-million project proposed for Central Highlands road upgrade​

The Traffic Safety Project Management Unit has proposed a US$170 million project to upgrade part of National Highway 19 which connects the Central Highlands and the central region of Vietnam. The unit suggested the Ministry of Transport seek the Government's nod for the project with funding sourced from the World Bank (WB), a Vietnam News Agency report said. The highway stretches 243 kilometers and links the Central Highlands and the south-central provinces of Vietnam and those bordering Laos and Cambodia. It starts from Quy Nhon Port in the central province of Binh Dinh and ends at Le Thanh border gate in the Central Highlands. Around US$150 million out of the US$ 170 million needed for the project is expected to come from the lBRD and the remainder from the State budget. If the Government approves the project, the unit can complete an initial investment plan for it this month and the pre-feasibility study in January 2017.

Hanoi greenlights Disney-esque park

The Hanoi People’s Committee has approved the plan to build 198-hectare Kim Quy (Golden Turtle) Amusement Park, inspired by Disneyland Hong Kong, in Dong Anh district, according to newswire VOV.vn. The amusement park is one of the 25 parks that will be built in the capital in the next five years. Five of these parks will reach international standards.

Road connecting Vo Nguyen Giap street and Soc Son satellite urban area to be constructed

ADB funds trade in Vietnam

The Trade Finance Program (TFP) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide annual guarantees of up to US$20 million to fuel trade growth in Vietnam under a pact the ADB and Orient Commercial Joint Stock Bank (OCB) have just signed. With the participation of OCB, the TFP now has 12 bank partnerships in Vietnam, ADB said in a statement. ADB described Vietnam as one of the top five most active among the 20 developing markets where the TFP has been operational in the past few years. To date, the program has conducted 4,479 transactions, supporting over US$6.9 billion in trade in this market.

Telstra, Comviq show interest in Vietnam's Mobifone

Australia’s largest telecommunications provider Telstra is the latest foreign company to show its interest in picking up a stake in Vietnam’s second largest mobile operator MobiFone, according to reports in local media. Telstra now joins a list of international teclos, which include Norway’s Telenor, Sweden’s Comviq and Malaysia’s Axiata, all of who have expressed interest in MobiFone’s privatisation, which is slated to be implemented by the first half of next year.

Saigon Securities unit closes $40m fund to invest in listed, private firms

SSI Asset Management (SSIAM), a unit of Vietnam’s largest brokerage house Saigon Securities Inc, has closed a $40-million fund last week, with funding from Japan’s Daiwa Securities Group, said a senior executive with the firm. The announcement followed another disclosure that SSIAM will launch a $200 million Luxembourg-domiciled, open-ended fund by the end of June.

Entertainment property, a less developed segment of the real estate sector, is becoming much more attractive to developers after a range of projects have been set in motion. Aside from foreign investors like Empire Group and Gaw Capital Partners, domestic developers have also built up some recreational complexes in Vietnam. For example, there are Sun Group’s Asia Park and Fantasy Park in Danang and the Fansipan cable car system in Sapa. Vingroup, another big conglomerate, set up its Vinpearl land recreational resorts in different provinces in the country, especially Safari in Phu Quoc Island-currently the biggest zoo in Vietnam.
