SBV ushers in new forex rate mechanism

Vietnam Investment Review

A central forex rate replacing Vietnam’s old pegging forex method, together with the introduction of forward contracts, is expected to facilitate foreign currency trading and minimise currency risk for Vietnamese businesses. The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) issued Decision No. 2730-QD-NHNN, adopting a market-oriented daily reference rate starting January 4, 2016, for which the rate is calculated based on a weighted average value of the dong on the prior trading day and the prices of eight major foreign currencies from countries having a large volume of trade and investments with Vietnam.

Vietnam welcomes record high FDI

Foreign capital flowing into Vietnam reached a record high last year, promising more economic growth but more competition for domestic companies.  According to the General Statistics Office, there were over 2,000 FDI projects with total capital of US$15.6 billion, along with another 814 projects expanding their investment to US$7.2 billion by the end of 2015, a year-on-year increase of 12.5%.

Vietnam’s per capita GDP 2015 reaches more than $2,100

Per capita GDP in 2015 was estimated at VND 45.7 million (US$2,100), up US$ 57 compared with 2014, according to the General Statistics Office. Vietnam’s GDP in 2015 is estimated to increase 6.68% over 2014, higher than the target 6.2% and higher than the growth rates of the years from 2011 to 2014. These figures showed the recovery of the economy.

ANA becomes Vietnam Airlines' main partner with $108 million stake purchase

Japan's ANA Holdings said it plans to buy an 8.8 percent stake in state-controlled Vietnam Airlines, becoming its main strategic partner in a deal that values the Southeast Asian carrier at about US$1.2 billion. Vietnam Airlines Chief Executive Officer Pham Ngoc Minh told Reuters in a text message that the sale could be completed as soon as the middle of this year. The 8.8 percent stake sale for US$108 million is a boost for the government's privatization drive which has been criticized as sluggish and lacking appeal, but falls short of the 20 percent holding that the airline had been seeking to sell to strategic partners.

Vietnamese company to partner with Airbus to produce aircraft spare parts

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam recently proposed that the Ministry of Transport recommend an 100-per-cent-Vietnamese-owned company, Aerospace Engineering Services JSC to be Airbus Group’s partner in building a facility to produce spare parts for aircraft. AESC is a certificated Part 145 repair station certificated by the European Aviation Safety Agency and the Federal Aviation Administration. AESC wanted to cooperate with Airbus to produce aircraft wiring harness installed in the most-used aircraft model in Vietnam, the A320/A321. It would fit Airbus’s plan in finding a partner to establish a production facility in Vietnam.

Vietnamese retailers brace for 7-Eleven entrance

According to Nikkei, in July 2015, the group’s US-based subsidiary Seven Eleven Inc. signed a contract with IFB Vietnam, owner of Pizza Hut’s Vietnamese restaurant chain, to open its first 7-Eleven convenience store in HCMC. The number of establishments is set to reach 100 in the next three years and 1,000 within ten years.

Walmart execs to discuss cooperation with Vietnam suppliers in Jan

Vietnamese companies will have the chance to meet and discuss with Walmart executives how to become a qualified supplier for the world’s largest retailer. in an event taking place in HCMC on January 15. The event will be jointly organized by AmCham, Walmart and the Vietnam Trade Facilitation Alliance (VTFA). The conference will include discussions with Walmart executives and explanations about how to become a qualified supplier for Walmart’s global supply chains. Herb Cochran, executive director of AmCham Vietnam, said the meeting will let Vietnamese suppliers know what requirements and procedures they have to satisfy and carry out to be able to put their products on Walmart shelves.

HCMC planned for 3 more low-rise residential areas

The detailed plan 1/500 of three residential areas B1, B2, B3 in Truong Thanh and Long Truong Ward, District 9 was approved by HCMC Committee. From that, all three areas were planned to be developed as low-rise residential areas with public facilities. Saigon Golf JSC will be the developer of the urban residential project in Truong Thanh and Long Truong Ward. The residential has the total area of 269.9 ha and to be developed as eco-tourism and garden-homes residential areas including public facilities and houses with low construction density.[The original article is available in Vietnamese only.]

Over sixty commercial projects shift to social housing

Sixty-two commercial-housing projects with 41,769 apartments in total has registered to be social-housing projects all over the country so far, according to the Ministry of Construction. Of the 62, Hanoi has 24 projects with 15,468 apartments and combined investment of VND 9.3 trillion (US$ 465 million). Another 19 projects in the capital city are being considered for entrance into the programme. HCM City has 25 projects registered to be converted into social-housing projects with 15,115 flats and a total investment of VND 9.1 trillion (US$ 454 million).

Mai Dich-Nam Thang Long express overpass construction to begin in May 2016

The Ministry of Transportation will invest on building nearly 5.4 km road, in which the length of the Mai Dich – Nam Thang Long overpass is 4.9 km, with the estimated cost of construction up to VND3,696 billion. The source of funding for the project comes from Japan's ODA and domestic reciprocal capital. The project has 4 lanes, with design speed of 100 km/h. The Mai Dich – Nam Thang Long overpass is part of the Hanoi Ring Road, built along the divider on expanded Pham Van Dong Road. The starting point of the project lies North of Mai Dich overpass; the ending point South of Thang Long bridge.
