2019 GDP growth beats expectations

Vietnam’s gross domestic product (GDP) this year has expanded by 7.02%, above the 6.6%-6.8% target set by the National Assembly early this year. The full-year GDP expansion is mainly driven by an 8.9% rise in industry and construction, followed by a 7.3% pickup in services and a 2.01% improvement in the agro-forestry-fishery sector. These sectors' contributions to the overall economic growth are recorded at 50.4%, 45% and 4.6%, respectively.




Foreign investment highest in 10 years

Pledged foreign investment in Vietnam had reached US$38.02 billion in the year to December 20, the highest in the past decade, according to the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment.



CapitaLand Vietnam & Surbana Jurong collaborate on smart city solutions

CapitaLand Vietnam and Surbana Jurong signed an MoU recently with the aim of collaborating on and developing sustainable smart city solutions for CapitaLand Vietnam’s real estate projects in the future. CapitaLand Vietnam will be able to leverage the technical consultancy capabilities of Surbana Jurong in areas such as master planning, quantity surveying, project management, and urban, architectural, and engineering design. It can also tap into its varied experience, especially in areas of township, industrial, and commercial projects.




Uniqlo to launch first Hanoi store next year

Japanese fashion retailer Uniqlo announced it will open the first Hanoi store in the Spring of 2020, months after its country debut in Saigon. Uniqlo Vietnam is now recruiting salesclerks for monthly wages of VND7-8 million (US$303-346) for its second store in the country, whose location has not been revealed. The brand's first outlet in the country, Uniqlo Dong Khoi in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1, was opened earlier this month. It attracted 2,000 people on its opening day, with people queuing up since 4 a.m. to take advantage of opening discounts.




Khanh Hoa bans selling tourism real estate projects to foreigners


Department of Construction of Khanh Hoa province had sent an official letter to request 129 investors of tourism real estate projects in districts of Cam Lam and Van Ninh, Ninh Hoa town, Nha Trang city and Cam Ranh city about not selling tourism real estate to foreign organizations and individuals. According to the department, tourism real estate is not housing, not regulated by the Law on Housing 2014. Therefore, when investors put this real estate into a business, they must comply with the Law on Real Estate Business 2014.




HCM City plans to build new IP in Binh Chanh



The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has submitted to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc a proposed zoning plan of 1/2000 scale for a new 380-hectare industrial park (IP) in Binh Chanh district. The new IP located in Pham Van Hai commune will focus on science and technology, startups and the supporting industry, according to the municipal People’s Committee. The city is shifting its economic structure towards services, industry and urban construction, focusing on high-tech industries and services to support urban activities. An urbanization rate of 80-90% is expected by 2030. Accordingly, the city will restrict the use of land for agricultural cultivation.




ACV starts work on US$97 mil terminal in Thua Thien-Hue

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) on September 29 started work on the T2 passenger terminal at Phu Bai international airport (HUI) in the central coastal province of Thua Thien-Hue. Planned work includes a passenger terminal and supporting facilities to serve 5 million passengers per year, including one million foreigners; and some 9 million passengers per year in 2030. The terminal will be built at a total capital of VND2,350 billion from ACV's development capital and expected to be put into operation in the fourth quarter in 2021.




Long An has first high-rise factory cluster

Located at the Long Hau Industrial Park in Long Hau Commune, Can Giuoc District, the six-storey facility covers some 20,000 square meters of land, with each factory built on 100 to 3,300 square meters. 

Eight domestic and foreign investors have registered to rent some 70% of space in the cluster for their operations. Most of them are involved in manufacturing supporting industry and hi-tech products.





First certified Halal convenience store opens in HCM City


The first certified Halal convenience store was put into service in Ho Chi Minh City on December 25, giving Muslimsin the southern metropolis more food choices. The store, located at district 1’s Phan Chu Trinh Street and run by Saigon Trading Corporation, is certified by the representative board of the Muslim community in the city. With more than 300 Halal products, it is expected to be a shopping and culinary destination for visitors in HCM City in general and the Muslim community in particular.




E-commerce website to down shutters


E-commerce website will stop operating from January 20 as the South Korean parent company changes its business plan. A representative of Lotte Vietnam Co. Ltd. told VnExpress that existing suppliers of could partner with retail chain Lotte Mart on a new platform, but gave no further details.
