The Spirit of Saigon sees sings of progress after long delay

After more than eight years of delay, the first 214 apartment units of The Spirit of Saigon (formerly The One HCMC) were permitted to be sold to buyers as “future units”, according to a source from HCMC Construction Department. With the investment capital of VND12 trillion ($521.74 million), this project is developed on 8,600 square metres of land area and now offers 214 high-end apartment units for sale.

Boosting investment into specialised industrial parks

More investment has been channelled into building specialised industrial parks to meet the burgeoning business demand in the southern region. Industry experts believe that the trend of building specialised IPs and ICs to meet businesses’ specific needs and to hail the anticipated rising wave of foreign investment into Vietnam will gain momentum in the time ahead.

Vietnam jumps 23 places in economic freedom index

The Heritage Foundation has released the 2020 Index of Economic Freedom report. The country’s overall score has increased by 3.5 points due to a dramatic gain in fiscal health. Vietnam is ranked 21st among 42 countries in the Asia–Pacific region, and its overall score is slightly below the regional and world averages. The Vietnamese economy has gradually been climbing the ranks of the mostly unfree since 2011. Strong GDP growth over the past five years has mirrored this improvement, driven by export-focused manufacturing and processing sectors.

Vietnam Airlines temporarily halts international flights

National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines announced on March 19 that it will temporarily suspend all its international operations from now until April 30 because the growing coronavirus outbreak continues to develop quickly in many places around the world. Accordingly, the carrier will stop flights between Vietnam and Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar from  March 21; routes linking Vietnam with the UK, Japan starting on March 23; flights from Vietnam to Germany, Australia from March 24 and returning flights to Vietnam from March 25.

Ha Noi approves establishment of two industrial clusters

The Ha Noi People’s Committee has approved the establishment of Dong La Industrial Cluster (IC) and the second phase of Duong Lieu IC in the city’s Hoai Duc District. The committee has directed Hoai Duc District People's Committee to select investors with sufficient financial capacity to develop technical infrastructure of the two ICs.

Vietnam sees H1 exports to EU falling 6-8 pct due to coronavirus

Restrictions imposed by some EU countries at their borders in response to the virus outbreak will slow down shipments of goods from the Southeast Asian country and also impact demand from European buyers, the ministry said. The EU is Vietnam’s second largest export market, after the United States. Key exports include apparel and footwear products, furniture and smartphones. EU lawmakers last month approved a free trade agreement with Vietnam, and Vietnamese trade minister said he hoped the deal would take effect in July.

Online shopping sees rapid growth given COVID-19 epidemic in Vietnam

An increasing number of people in the Southeast Asian country have opted for online shopping as a way to protect themselves from the disease that transmits via respiratory droplets. A representative of Vietnamese retailer Saigon Co.op said that orders placed on phone calls and its official website have ascended tenfold compared to normal days. Vietnam's leading e-commerce site Tiki also reported strong growth in the first two months of this year, with sought-after products being face masks, wet tissues, and air purifiers.
